Mental health

Mental Health Consultations are an essential part of caring for your overall health. Your mental wellbeing is just as important as your physical health, and we are here to listen to you and offer support.  We can also refer you to a range of organisations and services specific to your needs.

Would a Mental Health Consultation help?

Mental health is not just about experiencing anxiety, mental illness, depression or distress. We all have tough times, but good mental health and wellbeing comes from generally feeling good, being able to function well, and feel connected to whānau and friends.

Over 25% of people experience mental health challenges and rates of mental distress can be higher for people experiencing extra stress or anxiety like young adults, those experiencing challenging circumstances or hardship, or those exploring new preferences, such as emerging Rainbow community members.

Our Mental Health Consultation Service team provides expert advice, in an environment which is free from judgment. We are here to listen and work with you to put together a treatment plan. Common mental health issues included : Anxiety, depression, mood disorders, addiction and Bipolar Disorder.

What happens during Mental Health Consultations?

  • It’s great to ask for help early. You can talk to your GP or Health Improvement Practitioner, who will be able to assess your mental wellness. Health Improvement Practitioners are specially trained in mental health and addiction, they work alongside doctors to support your mental wellness needs.
  • We will ask you about your lifestyle and any symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety.
  • We may be able to give you an immediate diagnosis or we will refer you to other mental health specialists if needed.
  • Together we will develop a plan to manage your mental wellbeing. This could be a long term plan, which could include prescribing medication as well as lifestyle changes to manage stress and addiction.
  • Sometimes bringing a support person to the consultation can really help.

Areas that may be discussed during a Mental Health Consultation

  • What emotional and physical symptoms are you experiencing ?
  • How long have you felt these symptoms ?
  • A discussion about your eating, sleeping and drinking habits.
  • Do you have Whānau or friends to support you?
  • What things have you done so far to improve your mental wellness?
  • What resources are you aware of to support your mental wellbeing?
It is recommended to book a double appointment for a Mental Health Consultation.
