It’s no secret that an estimated 250,000 New Zealanders have diabetes. Furthermore, this number is projected to rise sharply  if increasing obesity and poor lifestyle choices are not addressed.  Moreover, Māori, Pasifika and Asian populations are statistically more susceptible to diabetes.

The vast majority of people have Type 2 Diabetes. Generally, it usually occurs in older people and has lifestyle links and is often secondary to obesity.  However, Type 1 Diabetes is also on the rise.  In fact, 5 to 10 % of people living with diabetes have this form of the disease.
