Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An Electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of your heart. An ECG indicates your heart’s health and can pick up any abnormalities. Our ECG clinic specialists use this as a first step in general cardiology to assess your heart’s health. It’s good to know that an electrocardiogram heart test is quick, painless and non-invasive.

What is an Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Did you know that an ECG is the most common general cardiology test? We use it for assessing the condition of your heart. Rest assured, our experienced clinicians ensure your ECG is done efficiently. Fortunately, electrocardiograms are a safe, painless and effective diagnostic tool.

An ECG only measures the electrical activity of your heart, it does not put any electricity into your body. Our GPs may do ECG tests to investigate cardiac symptoms you may have noticed. For example, you might have experienced palpitations or chest discomfort or an ECG as part of a general health check-up.

What can you expect during an ECG clinic heart test?

  • An ECG clinic is quick – the heart test takes 5 to 10 minutes
  • Small sticky patches are positioned on your chest, arms and legs, and then leads are attached to the machine. Naturally, our team will ensure your privacy and confidence.
  • Next, we’ll ask you to rest quietly as the machine measures your heart’s electrical activity. Then, finally, our staff will talk you through what is happening.
  • An ECG test is painless and non-invasive
  • Moreover, our doctors can immediately look at the ECG test printout and advise if cardiology treatment or tests are needed.
  • A record of your test will be available on your Patient Portal.

Specialist ECG Tests

The ECG done in our clinics is called a resting ECG and will be reviewed by one of our GPs.
If you require further investigation, we may refer you for specialised ECG tests, including:

  • An Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT). First, we’ll do an ECG heart check while you are at rest. Then a second test while exercising. This heart test shows if any problems occur when your heart has to work harder or when it is placed under stress.
  • A Cardiac Holter Monitoring Test picks up heart problems during certain exercises or exertion. It records heart activity for 24 or 48 hours.
  • Event Monitoring is an ECG test that you activate when you experience symptoms like dizziness, chest pain or palpitations.
Finally, your doctor will advise you about specialist tests, treatment and further cardiology investigations if more than a general heart check-up is required.

To join our clinic, you first need to fill out the patient enrolment forms to register with the PHO that we belong to. This is a Ministry of Health requirement.

You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility which may include the following forms of identification:

  • NZ Passport or NZ birth certificate
  • International passport with resident visa OR work visa of minimum 24-month duration

On the enrolment form you need to indicate which of our doctors (currently taking new patients) that you would like to be registered with.

Yes. As part of completing your enrollment, we request that you have a new patient screening appointment with one of our Nursing or Medical Centre Assistant team members.

This new patient appointment enables our team to work with you to better understand your current health and wellbeing.

Following the new patient appointment as above, you can book your first consultation with your nominated doctor.

All GP appointments are 15 minutes long.

  • One appointment is for a single health issue.
  • Should you wish to have a 30-minute GP appointment, it will be charge at a non-subsidized rate.
  • Depending on your age and health, one of our specialist nursing or pharmacist clinicians may be able to spend more time with you.

If you are a new patient, you will get full access to the patient portal “My Indici” once you have completed your enrolment.

Payment is required at time of consultation. Please note that unpaid accounts will incur an additional $10 monthly administration cost.

If you need an urgent appointment, then please phone the clinic. We have doctors available to discuss your urgent health needs on the day.

We recommend that you plan ahead and request your repeat medicines via your patient portal My Indici two weeks before you run out. If you do not have access to a portal, you can phone us and leave a message with the nurse to organise this. Our doctors use an electronic prescribing system which can send your prescription to your local pharmacy (please specify name and location).

We understand that things can change on the day, but we ask that you call us to advise that you are not able to make your appointment. If we do not hear from you minimum 2 hours prior to your scheduled time, you will receive an invoice for this missed appointment.
